lyrics

V1 -

She was beautiful to the cuticle,
Caught her scent every time she went to her cubicle.
Every morning I’m hoping she’d think I’m suitable,
To be the one she’ll leave with/ never thought it was do-able.

Desk full of her children’s pictures/ she got two,
Screen saver/ a bible scripture/ she got to,
Be/ one of them church goers/ I looked over,
Her shoulder/ one day trying to get closer/ and said hello.

She smiled back at me/ ya boy happy/ like “I’m in”,
It only took a few months/ but now we laughing like we friends.
Snuck a couple of blunts/ during our lunch/ and we’d pretend,
That we was living it up/ talking about which colour Benz.

We would buy/ then she started cry,
Didn’t know if she was sad/ or side effects of being high.,
Said that she was glad to have someone she could confide,
In my mind I’m like “friend zone”/ mouth asking her “why“?

She said she had a man/ and how she really loved him,
He was the father of her kids/ but he didn’t love ‘em.
Always questioned if they his/ said they looking nothing,
Like him/ in his mind she always up to something.

The jealous type/ so/ even though I like,
The fact that we could kick it as friends/ I’m thinking it should end.
Maybe keep it at the job/ that way I wouldn’t have to spend,
All my time/ thinking ‘bout/ all of the ways/ I could offend.

Damn - She left me on the step/ looking real upset,
Couldn’t help but think there’s more/ but I didn’t press.
Walking over to my desk/ my brain’s kind of messed,
I guess/ it’s what I get/ especially when the Buddha bless.

I could tell she felt alone/ she sounded stressed when brother phoned,
And every line she said was “yes, when I get home”.
And each day after/ not a sexy dress was worn,
And only make-up that she used/ to cover bruises on her arm.

So I told her….

Hook -

(I said) - Fly little phoenix fly,
You been living in the ashes now it’s time to rise.
Spread your wings/ I can see the fire in your eyes,
You the only one ain’t see it/ cus he kept you blind.
But now your sights back/ it’s time to fight back,
And take flight/ to a height/ where all the sky’s black
And as that light shine from you/ it‘s a known fact,
Your flame will never go out/ you control that.

V2 -

She thought I’d never noticed/ but I’m always focused,
Her image printed in my brain/ but I ain’t want expose it.
Didn’t want to tell nobody/ she said I was closest,
Friend that she had/ because her man ain’t like/ the ones she rolled with.

And every time she’d go out - it be blow out,
So even when its work/ she the biggest flirt/ at a whore house.
Forget a mini skirt/ or a shirt that’s tight like a bow now,
He picking out her clothes/ like a 5 year old/ in store aisle.

Still I never said shit/ she’d only deny it,
Cus any time I dropped hints/ she told me be quiet.
I don’t understand/ yelling at me in defiance,
But that’s what happens when the sheep/ go to sleep/ with the lions.

They really wolves underneath all the roaring/ they trying,
To keep they claws and they teeth showing/ preying on frighten.
Individuals/ he tell her he love her/ he lying,
It’s fucked up/ she’s a hell of a mother who’s dying.

A little bit a day,
I wish that she could see/ the woman that she is today.
I wish that I could be/ the man that wipe her tears away,
Cus she deserving much more/ for all the years she gave.

Thought I’d make her day with flowers at her desk/ bought a card with a car on it,
Wrote a couples jokes inside/ not a love sonnet.
Saw her crack a smile/ for awhile/ that was her tonic,
Looking like she did/ in that moment we were first talking.

Knew she couldn’t take the flowers home I didn’t stress it,
To see her happy for a minute/ it was such a blessing.
Heading home/ I could hear my phone/ text a message,
But when I read it/ it was her/ she said her man had threatened.

To hurt her and the kids because he found the card she kept it,
He walking round the crib yelling/ and he got a weapon.
Called her back and said “I’ll be there in a millisecond” ,
“Where you at?”/ heard the shots ‘fore she answered the question.

Now I’m praying…
